Delivery of National Flag Ceremony
As part of the special programme for schools, we were visited on Wednesday by two Air Corps Sergeants from the Irish Defence Forces. We had a special ceremony where they presented us with the Irish flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation.
Maureen and Joe from 6th Class welcomed Flight Sergeant Noel Daly and Sergeant Darren Cosgrave to our school. We were delighted that John Stephenson, from the 1916 Mendicity Garrison Relatives Group, was also able to join us and share the story of his grandfather’s role during 1916.
The ceremony opened with 6th Class showcasing their fantastic Irish dancing. Sergeant Daly then introduced the ceremony and and Andrei, Briana, Emilin, Carl, Kian and Saoda helped Sergeant Cosgrave to read the Proclamation. The children spoke clearly and confidently. All of the children had the opportunity to ask questions about caring for the flag which was then presented to our School Citizen of the Year, Josh. Melissa then introduced 4th, 5th and 6th Classes who sang the Irish national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann beautifully. We were very proud to accept the flag and look forward to inviting parents/carers to our flag raising on 15th March 2016.

Time to Read Launch
This morning we launched our ‘Time to Read’ programme. We have been selected by ‘Business in the Community’ as their school partner for this year. The company, who support businesses to engage with their local communities, is based on O’Connell Street. Each week from now on, they will send four volunteers to read with eight lucky 2nd Class children. These children will benefit from having someone to read to them on a one-to-one basis with specially chosen books to help promote a love of reading. The children will also have an opportunity to visit the Ilac library and the ‘Business in the Community’ offices. To find out more about the ‘Time to Read’ programme, have a look at their flyer:

Visit of the Sam Maguire
There was huge excitement this morning with the unexpected arrival of the Sam Maguire with some of the Dublin team. Dublin recently won the All-Ireland Gaelic Football Championships and the ‘Sam Maguire’ is the very famous trophy awarded to the champions.
We all gathered in the hall, gave our best rendition of ‘Molly Malone’ with three cheers for the team and had our photos taken with the cup. A very exciting morning!
Sponsored Harvest Disco
All children received a letter and sponsor form this week for our Harvest Disco next Friday. We are hoping to raise lots of money for our school so we can buy new furniture and resources. We are asking all families to ask their friends and neighbours to contribute something small. For families who celebrate Hallowe’en, children may dress up for the disco. For families who don’t celebrate, children can wear their own clothes to school. If you’d like another sponsor form, please ask your child’s class teacher or see Liz in the office. Let’s get fundraising!
